the facts of me: linking up with i wore yoga pants.

Because I apparently don’t want any of you to like me anymore, I’m participating in The Facts of Me Link-Up and sharing the following with you:

I have an irrational fear of jam and jelly. I’ve never eaten them. I never will. Last year, I had to help my host mom make her homemade jam. It was a gag worthy experience. Other big (and more normal) fears: heights (although, not flying), being held underwater, FOMO.

Salsa is my favorite food. For me, the best (both red and green) come from Guadalajara Hacienda in Houston. I buy it by the quart and will eat it out of the container with only a spoon. But really, I will eat any salsa (except for the poor excuses for salsa in Germany).

I don’t like watching movies. This may be why I’ve never seen every movie that everyone says I should have seen, i.e. The Sound of Music, The Godfather, and Pulp Fiction. I blame it on my self-diagnosed, adult-onset ADD.

Instead, I am obsessed with television series. I cannot watch without watching from start to finish. I must know everything about every character and fully understand their motives. I have an app on my phone to keep up with them all. Series I’ve seen every episode of: “Arrested Development”, “Breaking Bad”, “Downton Abbey”, “Episodes”, “Friends”, “Girls”, “Grey’s Anatomy”, “Homeland”, “How I Met Your Mother”, “Lost”, “Mad Men”, “Modern Family”, “Nashville”, “Once Upon a Time”, “Revenge”, “Scandal”, “Sex and the City”, “Shark Tank”, “Suits”, “Switched at Birth”, “The Big C”, “The New Normal”, “The O.C.”, and “Weeds”. “Dexter”, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”, and “The New Girl” are currently in progress. Oh, and I always watch “The Bachelor(ette) (Pad)”. Please, no one calculate how many days of my life this adds up to.

Helene from Helene in Between and I think we’re meant to be best friends. We’ve never met. Or spoken in real. Oh, and we only found each other’s blogs a month or two ago. But I tell you, this best friendship is real!

I can’t swallow pills. Yes, this is embarrassing to tell y’all. It’s also embarrassing to tell every doctor and human being who has to prescribe or buy me meds. I think it’s a complex I developed after barely choking on a Starburst in preschool. Don’t try and teach me to swallow pills. I’ve heard every trick. I don’t want to try.

I love to gamble, particularly playing crapsIt is a good thing craps is an American thing and all the casinos in Europe don’t have it. I highly recommend craps to every Vegas/New Orleans first timer. Why? It’s a group game with lots of energy and cheering, everyone-one-against the house mentality, your money can sit on the table awhile (unlike blackjack or roulette), and it offers the lowest house advantage in casinos (black jack is second).

I get stressed when people ask me my hobbies or what I do in my free time. This is mainly because they are things some might not consider hobbies like talking and drinking with friends, blogging, and watching TV series from start to finish. Of course, when the sun is shining, these activities can be done outdoors. Obviously, travel is on the list, too.

Food – what can I say but I love it? Top 5 favorite cuisines: 1) Tex-Mex 2) Thai 3) Turkish 4) Steak & BBQ 5) Seafood.

I don’t like the beach. I mean, they’re beautiful and all, but saltwater, sand, and I don’t get along. I prefer a beautiful, freshwater lake any day.

My ultimate pet peeve is when you unsubscribe from emails and then receive an email saying you are unsubscribed. The whole point of unsubscribing was that I never had to receive another email, and there you go and do it again. It’s all kinds of twisted.

I’m currently working to launch my own small business, but that’s all I can say about that right now. You guys will hear more soon!

Linked up with the witty cool (sounds like really cool right?) Whitney from I Wore Yoga Pants!

  • Niken

fear of jam and jelly?? i’ve never heard of that before. you’re right. you’re crazy. but i love you anyway. haha

  • bevchen

I’ve never even heard of half of those TV series!

My brother can’t swallow pills either. He gets liquid hayfever medicine and takes flavoured liquid paracetamol (meant for kids!) when he has a headache.

    • ifs ands & butts

Ah for real?! Then I have SO many suggestions for you. And yes taking medicine so sucks when you can’t swallow pills because everything tastes terrible. So glad your brother can’t either – I’m not alone!

  • haileyhiggs

Alex- I have watched almost every one of those shows and am equally addicted to TV series! I also feel you on the ocean thing- I’d rather be at a lake any day!

    • ifs ands & butts

Gah and that lake right near you is going to be SO awesome in the summer!

  • Anja

Some really entertaining facts =) I’m with you on the hobby front…. luckily I added crafting / DIY as an “official” hobby now, so at least I’ve got something to talk about, ha ha! Most of the series on your list have made it into our home, too. We’re just rewatching Friends for the umptieth time. Let’s not tell anyone about it, okay?

Really curious about your business… when are we going to hear more?

    • ifs ands & butts

You can NEVER watch too many Friends episodes. It seriously never gets old.

Hopefully soon on the business, I plan on launching the Website in the coming week if all goes according to plan!

  • Kendahl @ As told by Kendahl

You may be my twin when it comes to TV. I watch so much it’s ridiculous! I pretty much watch all the same shows. Some much time off our lives haha

    • ifs ands & butts

Hahaha I know… but ya know, sometimes TV is exactly what I want to be doing. Ok, a lot of times :)

  • Kim

So funny! I agree about the beach and being from Florida ppl don’t understand! It’s just such a mess lol! Also, salsa! Yessss!! And I’m pretty sure we have the exact same taste in television! In also not a big movie person unless in actually in the theater!

    • ifs ands & butts

Hahaha so funny you agree about the beach being from Florida. I figured Floridians grew up all sandy so you don’t mind it 😉 Really. I want. No, need. Salsa right now.

      • Steven

I lived in Florida my entire life, but I haven’t been to the beach in years. Driven along it, sure.

  • MySwissChocolateLife

Wow this is interesting that you don’t like jam 😉 I love Croissants with Jam! TV series is +something I am currently obsessed with too! I like “The real houswifes of NYC and Beverly Hills”, “Gossip Girls”, “How i met your mother” and “The Bing bang theory”! There is nothing better than a series evening under cosy plaid!
Gamling is so funny:) Unfortunetelly I’ve only been to one casino in Baden Baden but I highly recommend it.
Please visit us in Switzerland :) We can cook Tex Mex and swim in the lake :D! OMG I would like to skype with you soon! I am planning to start my own small business too!

  • MySwissChocolateLife

Thx for your comment. I am planning to visit Karlsruhe soon. I’ll let you know if you don’t mind. I know there a few interesting guys (my previous colleagues) so we can finde there a valentine for you hehe 😀

    • ifs ands & butts

      1) Germans LOVE their jam, so it’s been an issue for me here. I knew I hated it before but it’s just everywhere here! 2) I think I’ll do Big Bang Theory as my next sitcom once I finish the others. My coworkers used to call me Penny when I started here because it was always me and a bunch of nerds :) 3) I’ve been to the one in Baden-Baden and it’s gorgeous but it was SO quiet and serious, I couldn’t believe it – such a contrast to Vegas or New Orleans. 4) I’d LOVE to come visit – definitely when it’s warmer we should plan something and 5) Skype is a definite – I have no idea what I’m doing. My username is abuttsy. 6) You BETTER tell me when you come to KA!

  • Claire

“But really, I will eat any salsa (except for the poor excuses for salsa in Germany).” YES! I so agree with this! I’ve found a decent place in Cologne, and I’m going to Berlin this weekend and will bravely try out a restaurant or two, but overall the salsa here is awful!

And I can totally sympathize with stressing out about questions about hobbies and free time. Most of the things I enjoy doing are either really nerdy or lame, or else I’m just a beginner and don’t feel like I can claim it as a hobby in case someone thinks I’m an expert.

    • ifs ands & butts

I’m going to Cologne in a couple weeks for Carnival so you MUST tell me the name of this place so I can seek it out. I’ve seriously had some salsas here that are ketchup-y and sweet and it was just utterly disgusting. And such a good point about the beginner thing on the hobbies, too!

      • Claire

The place we liked was called Cantina Mexicana. It’s a little out of the way, but Colognes not too big of a city. To get there from Hauptbahhof take either the 16 or the 18 line to Neumarkt, then the 9 tram line to Weyertal, which it’s very close to.

Oh, and do NOT go to Cafe Especial. We went and it was very disappointing and really expensive (19.50 for fajitas!!).

        • ifs ands & butts

          Oh wow thanks so much!!

  • Whitney

So now, because of this post, i am in desperate need of Mexican food for lunch. And when people ask me what I do in my free time, I look at them crazy like ‘What’s free time?’

    • ifs ands & butts

Haha the problem is I have free time. I just use it SO horribly :)

And I SO wish I had any sort of access to Mexican food for lunch.

  • Melanie Montgomery

I don’t mind watching movie, but I much prefer to watch TV!

  • Nadine

Yes! I’m not alone in my freaky tv watching habits. I always have to start from the beginning (who starts a series on like season 3? No one) and then I get totally hooked and watch the rest of the entire thing. Literally way too many episodes a day. And I’d have to say our hobbies are exactly the same. Crafts, not for me. Drinking and watching tv? YES.

    • ifs ands & butts

I don’t even want to talk about how fast I watched Homeland. The worst were my breaks during college at home, I would TEAR through TV series. Two thumbs up for booze and TV.

    • Steven

Nadine, I had to start Big Bang Theory in the middle… I tried (more than once!) to watch the show from the beginning, and I found the opening few episodes to be *painful* to watch. I started watching it in current episodes a bit further down the line, and I found it to be very funny. I think I just needed to get to a point where they’d found their rhythm.

  • TinainGermany

I’ve never seen any of those movies either!

    • ifs ands & butts

That makes me really happy. Does telling people you haven’t seen the Sound of Music result horrifically, too?

  • its me kt

here i thought i was the only weirdo with a werid tv obbession LOL, come say hi

  • http:/// Staci

I get way stressed out when people ask me my hobbies too. Sometimes I end up completely lying & saying something like “I play tennis” (no I don’t). Then eventually my fiance will be looking on in horror as I hold down a 30 minute conversation with someone about some sport I have never even played. I think he realizes every day he is marrying a legitimate pyschopath.

Also, I once sat through an entire middle school play bewildered that my fellow students in the play were allowed to talk about “crack” & dealing “crack”. My 7th grade self was explaining this horror to my mom later that night when she informed me they were talking about “craps” So yea…I don’t gamble. That might be a new made-up hobby for me, though.

    • ifs ands & butts

pahaha I love that you would say you played tennis, but I would probably say that to as I have a dream of being this rockstar tennis mom, weird, I know, since I don’t play tennis either. and I LOVE that craps/crack story pahaha

  • Brandi @ California Grown

I am a total TV series junkie as well, many of those I have watched all the way through also. Visiting from the linkup! :)

    • ifs ands & butts

Any suggestions for what new series I can watch (granted, it will take me awhile to get through all of Dexter)? Thanks for stopping by!

  • Alyx Garner (@adodds)

Hahaha! A fear of jam? Really??? I’ve never heard of that before!

And I prefer lakes, too. :)

    • ifs ands & butts

I have NO idea where it came from either, but there’s this Jackass episode (I’m really mature) where this guy is scared of mustard and everyone sprays him with it and he FREAKS and I totally sympathize for him because if that were me and jelly…

  • Alisa

Love that ecard! I’m 99% sure I have it pinned already! I just went to a patio for margaritas on Sunday because the weather was so beautiful! Thank you North Texas!

    • ifs ands & butts

Ugh that makes me want to be in Texas right now – it’s just too cold for me in Germany right now and I’ve become the world’s biggest hermit. And ya, that e-card sums me up 100%.

  • Sara Louise

    We have the same hobbies!
Good luck on your small business venture, I really can’t wait to hear all about it :)

    • ifs ands & butts

You’ll hear all about it soon 😀

  • Shushu

You know what I just realized? I dont really like watching movies either. There are a few that I love watching. Not the full thing at one time though… Such as Sound of Music and Parent Trap and any of the Disney Movies.

    • ifs ands & butts

Ooooo Parent Trap is a total exception. Good call. But really, movies are so long! Well, that doesn’t explain how I can watch back-to-back-to-back-to-back Homeland episodes, but still.

    • ifs ands & butts

I love when you comment BTW

  • Steven

I can relate with the FOMO. Many a night I have been awake FAR longer than I should have been because I was worried I would miss something cool.

I watch more tv than you do.

    • ifs ands & butts

Impossible, no one watches more TV than I do 😛 what shows should I add to the list?

And FOMO abroad can be so brutal, gah.

      • Steven

        Alphas, Leverage, Merlin, Wedding Band
Don’t Trust The B in Apartment 23 (well, pulled off the schedule. Probably cancelled.

Shows I Used to watch, but gave up on:
It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Once Upon A Time

My recommendations for you to add, based on your existing viewing taste: Castle, Community, Franklin & Bash, The Newsroom, White Collar.

        • ifs ands & butts

White Collar could definitely be next because of A) Matt Bomer B) Netflix. I watched a couple episodes of Arrow but couldn’t decide if I should stick with it. Watched the first 3 seasons of True Blood, not sure why I stopped? Quit watching Glee when I moved to Germany. I’m starting to fall behind on Once Upon a Time, too many characters my gosh. I’ve watched a couple Newsrooms but haven’t fully gotten into it. SUITS I’m obsessed. I think I might also do House of Lies soon because a friend’s been raving about it.

No Family Guy? That’s my go to animated series.

You definitely raised the bar sir.

Shows I gave up on after watching several seasons: One Tree Hill, Gossip Girl, Desperate Housewives, Private Practice

Add Nashville to your list :)

          • Steven

LOL. I forgot completely about The Simpsons, The Cleveland Show, and Family Guy. I also forgot Covert Affairs, Cougar Town, Elementary, Grimm, and The Mentalist. House Of Lies is really good, but also kind of bleak and depressing at the same time.

I stopped watching Once Upon A Time because they got so scattered this year that I found I no longer care about any of the characters. I’m considering dropping Covert Affairs because they’ve **really** strayed away from the initial setup that made it such a fun show in the first place. Glee… I admit that I mostly just skip to the songs nowadays. I usually play Glee while I’m doing other things, like folding laundry or flossing the cat.

I’ve heard really great things about Smash and New Girl, but haven’t gotten into either one. The premise of Nashville didn’t really catch my attention- what do you like about it?

Sometimes, my tv watching is like a part time job.

            • ifs ands & butts

You officially win :) I forget about Cougar Town, I used to really like that one but since it dropped of ABC I haven’t caught up.

Nashville has some really great story lines and as a country music and all things southern fan, I really love the show but I don’t think you’d even have to be a country music fan to enjoy it. It has all the basic TV drama elements, character conflict, money, adultery, politics, etc.

The New Girl is hilarious – I started getting into it after watching a few episodes during my In-Flight Entertainment. I haven’t heard much about Smash.

Oh, and what is flossing the cat… like flossing the cat’s teeth? Way unfamiliar.

  • Steven

Cougar Town is only three or four episodes into the new run on TNT; it just came back a few weeks ago. Still very funny though.

“Flossing the cat” isn’t really a thing. I just like to say it as a nonsense activity. Underwater basket weaving, cat flossing, and so forth. Just my wackadoo sense of humor.

Oh, and I meant to comment earlier about True Blood- I don’t know that you’ve missed much by sort of tapering off on True Blood. The show isn’t as much fun as it was in the first two seasons. The good thing about that one, though, is that each season is only 12 episodes, so it’s pretty easy to catch up on DVD later on.

  • Antoinette | love.antoinette

Oooh for the first time I come across someone else who doesn’t like watching movies! I hate when people start quoting scenes from a movie and I’m completely lost because I have no idea whatsoever which movie it came from. I only grew up with two channels so I never cared much for television.

    • ifs ands & butts

I’d probably be much better off if I didn’t care so much for television :) but movies are just too long for me.

  • Katrin

I still like you, Alex! But I can’t believe you never had jam! Haha. That is awesome.
I love food and TV shows so much and I always have to drink at least half a liter of water when I have to swallow a pill. It is just so unnatural.

    • ifs ands & butts

hahaha maybe I should try just drinking a ton of water and hoping I swallow the pill, too. It really just seems so bizarre even though everyone always says that I swallow bigger pieces of food. Blah.
